After Martin Luther lit the torch known as the Protestant Reformation, many different expressions of "church" came into existence. In England, King Henry VIII's broke away from the Roman Catholic Church and formed the Church of England. This branch of the tree is known as the Anglican or Episcopal Church in America. John Wesley, founder of the Methodist movement, served as a priest in the Church of England -- as had his father, Samuel Wesley. Like Luther, Wesley never intended to start a new church. But, his reforms were too deep to remain in the Church of England and so the Methodist Church was born.
